SEPA Direct Debit (SDD) payment: why the charge isn't immediate
Symptom
A customer pays for a subscription/membership via SEPA Direct Debit (SDD) (direct SEPA debit on an IBAN): the order immediately shows as “processing” and access is activated, but the payment doesn’t show as “completed” for a number of days.
Cause
This isn’t an error: it’s the standard behavior of an SDD mandate. Unlike card or bank transfer, an SDD debit requires a waiting period (typically around 14 days) before the funds are actually withdrawn from the customer’s account, because the mandate has to be confirmed by the bank. During this period:
- the order shows as “processing” on the payment platform’s side;
- access/membership is still activated right away, so the customer doesn’t have to wait;
- the customer receives an initial activation confirmation email, and a second one at the end of the verification period when the payment actually shows as completed.
This behavior depends on the payment gateway (e.g. Stripe SDD) and SEPA rules, not on a POP invoicing plugin setting: SDD is not a payment method managed or configured by POP.
Fix
No action is needed to make the payment “complete sooner”: it’s a constraint of the SEPA system, not something that can be sped up on the site’s side. If a customer reports the delay:
- Confirm that they have received (or will receive) the mandate confirmation email from the bank/ gateway.
- Reassure them that access is already active in the meantime.
- If after about 14 days the payment still doesn’t show as completed, check the mandate’s status directly in the payment gateway’s panel (not in POP, which doesn’t handle this flow).
Related configuration
This behavior concerns the payment gateway/subscription, not the POP plugin’s e-invoicing settings: there is no POP configuration page for SDD.
