FAQ: POP for Shopify

Goal

Quickly get oriented on what POP for Shopify does (and doesn’t do) before diving into the individual configuration guides.

Before you start

Does POP calculate checkout taxes? No. Shopify remains solely responsible for calculating and applying taxes. POP uses the tax data present in Shopify to generate and send documents (PDF/XML, SdI/PEPPOL/KSeF).

Where do I configure VAT, OSS, markets, and tax rules? Always in Shopify Admin (Markets, Tax regions). For B2B, check the tax data on Company/Company Location where applicable.

Customer tax data

Where does POP get the customer’s tax data from? From order/customer metafields app.pop_* (pop_customer_type, pop_vat, pop_tax_code, pop_pec), with a fallback to the order’s customAttributes. Details and priority in shopify-fiscal-data-management.

Are the metafields created automatically? Yes, after the wizard and POP license are completed, it tries to create the missing definitions idempotently. If something is missing, the Home page shows a recovery section with a “Create missing metafields” button.

Shopify Plus vs non-Plus

What’s the difference in fiscal data collection at checkout? On Shopify Plus, the native POP Checkout UI Extension is available. On non-Plus stores, the fields are added to the cart/cart drawer via a script pasted into the theme — see shopify-non-plus-billing-fields.

Does POP support both B2B and B2C scenarios? Yes, both; the fiscal correctness of the document still depends on the quality of the data collected in Shopify.

Italy, SdI, and PEPPOL

Can Shopify’s native Tax Code/PEC fields be removed from checkout? No, Shopify applies them natively for Italy and they cannot be removed or modified by POP. They are still optional; disabling them requires a request to Shopify support.

Can I send to SdI with a store whose currency is not EUR? No. SdI flows require the Shopify store’s main currency to be EUR.

Is PEPPOL available for private customers? No. Automatic sending to PEPPOL always skips private customers (B2C); downloading the PDF as a courtesy document remains available. Details in shopify-reverse-charge.

Does POP validate the VAT number? Yes, through the official VIES service. The final tax decision on VAT application still rests with the Shopify configuration.

Plans and limits

How many documents can I generate per month? It depends on the active plan: Free 20/month, Basic 40/month, Growth 100/month, Pro 400/month, Enterprise 2000/month. Once the limit is exceeded, generation shows a warning with a link to upgrade.

Quick troubleshooting

I don’t see all the fiscal fields on the order/customer:

  1. Check that the wizard and POP license are completed.
  2. Check that the pop_* metafields have been created (otherwise use the recreation button on Home).
  3. Check the checkout/theme configuration.
  4. Check Markets/Tax in Shopify Admin.

The taxes on the invoice don’t match expectations:

  1. Check the Shopify tax rules.
  2. Check the customer type and saved fiscal data.
  3. Check for a failed VAT validation.
  4. Check the transmission channel (SdI/PEPPOL/KSeF) and that channel’s specific constraints.
